I'll be honest with you. I used to turn up to Pilates in whatever I'd grabbed off the floor that morning. An old pair of leggings that had lost their shape somewhere around 2022, a t-shirt that was slightly too big, socks that's straps over the bridge was coming loose. I told myself it didn't matter what I wore — I was there to work out, not to be photographed.
And then I bought a proper set. And everything changed.
Not in a dramatic, life-altering way. But in that quiet, understated way where you notice you're standing a little taller, you're not fidgeting with your waistband mid-teaser, and you feel genuinely good when you catch yourself in the studio mirror. Turns out what you wear to Pilates matters more than most of us admit.
So let's talk about it.
Why Pilates Is Different From Other Workouts
Pilates — whether you're on the reformer, the mat or the Cadillac — is a precision sport. Your instructor is watching your alignment constantly. They need to see how your spine is moving, whether your hips are square, if your shoulders are creeping up toward your ears again (guilty). Baggy clothes make that almost impossible.
Unlike running or cycling, Pilates is also relatively low-impact. You're not generating a huge amount of body heat, which means heavy, thick activewear can feel stifling rather than supportive. What you want is something that sits close to your body without restricting you — fabric that moves when you move, stays put when you need it to, and breathes enough that you're not overheating by the time you hit the hundred.
That's a specific brief. And it's worth getting right.
What to Actually Wear to Pilates in Australia
High Waist Leggings — Non-Negotiable
If there's one thing every Pilates regular in Australia will tell you, it's this: high waist leggings are not optional. They support your core during the work, they stay in place when your legs are in the straps, and they don't roll down when you're in a bridge. Full length styles are ideal for reformer classes where your legs are on display for most of the session.
Our Pilates Core Set leggings are made from a smooth nylon blend with four-way stretch — which means they move in every direction without bunching, sagging or losing their shape. The high waist sits firmly at your natural waist and stays there through every roll-down, every hundred, every single leg circle. Navy or black — both look equally sharp in the studio.
A Fitted Crop Top
Your Pilates instructor needs to see your torso. A loose t-shirt that billows around your midsection makes it much harder for them to give you accurate feedback on your form. A fitted crop top solves this entirely.
The crop top in our Pilates Core Set is short-sleeved, crew-neck, and sits close to the body without feeling tight. It's the kind of top that looks effortless but works hard — and because it's the same nylon blend as the leggings, the whole set moves as one piece. No riding up, no pulling down, no distractions.
Wear it tucked or untucked. Either works. Both look good.
A Layer for Before and After
Brisbane winters are mild, but they're still winters. And there's something deeply satisfying about arriving to your 7am reformer class in something warm and cosy, unzipping as you warm up, and zipping back up for the walk to your car with a coffee in hand.
This is exactly what The Teddy Crop was made for.
Our Teddy Crop is a cropped quarter-zip sweatshirt in polyester teddy fleece — soft, warm and just the right weight for Australian winters. It layers perfectly over The Pilates Core Set, which means you can walk in bundled up and strip down to your activewear the moment class starts without having to change outfits entirely. The contrast white stripe gives it that clean, sporty finish that looks intentional rather than thrown together.
Available in Light Blue, Blush Pink, Red, Grey and Black — both are excellent choices, and frankly, both are on our list of things to own.
Grip Socks
Most Pilates studios in Australia require grip socks on the reformer. It's a hygiene thing, and also a safety thing — the reformer carriage can be slippery, and grip socks keep your feet stable through footwork and standing on the reformer. If your studio doesn't require them, get them anyway. You'll notice the difference immediately.
A pair of good grip socks is one of the lowest-cost, highest-impact investments you can make in your Pilates practice.
The Australian Pilates Scene — What People Are Actually Wearing
If you've been to any of the Pilates studios around Australia lately — you'll have noticed that the dress code has quietly shifted. The days of showing up in whatever are fading. People are putting thought into their studio outfits, and the results speak for themselves.
Monochromatic matching sets are everywhere right now. Navy on navy. Black on black. A light blue crop over charcoal leggings. The look is clean, intentional and effortlessly put-together — and it photographs beautifully for that post-class mirror selfie (we're not judging, we've all done it).
What people are moving away from is the mismatched, shapeless, doesn't-fit-quite-right approach. Not because anyone's judging — Pilates is an incredibly welcoming community — but because when you feel good in what you're wearing, you show up differently. More confident. More focused. More present in the work.
From the Studio to the Street
One of the things we thought about when designing the LALLA activewear collection was the full arc of a Pilates morning.
You don't just do your class and teleport home. You walk to the car. You stop for a coffee. You run an errand. You might head into the office. You need activewear that can handle all of that without looking like you're still mid-workout — and without requiring you to change four times.
The Pilates Core Set goes from studio to street without missing a beat. The nylon blend doesn't crease, doesn't pill, and holds its shape whether you've been in a Pilates class for an hour or running errands for three. Throw The Teddy Crop over the top and you have a complete, polished look that works well beyond the reformer.
That's what we mean when we talk about activewear that works as hard as you do.
A Note on Fabric
Not all activewear is made equal, and fabric is where a lot of brands cut corners.
Nylon blend is our choice for The Pilates Core Set for a reason. It's smooth and second-skin without being restrictive. It wicks moisture without feeling plasticky. It holds its shape wash after wash, which means your leggings will look as good in a year as they do today. And it has that slight compression feel that supports your core and your legs through the entire class without ever feeling like it's squeezing you.
If you've ever worn cheap leggings to Pilates and spent the whole class pulling them up, you'll understand immediately why fabric matters.
Studio Pilates Everton Park — Our Brisbane Partnership
We're proud to partner with Studio Pilates Everton Park, one of Brisbane's go-to reformer studios. If you're a member there, you get 10% off your entire Lalla order, talk to Mikala at the branch for your unique code — no expiry, use it every time.
It felt like a natural fit. A Brisbane studio doing great work, a Brisbane brand making activewear designed for exactly that environment. We hope the partnership helps more women find the kit that makes them feel good in class.
The Bottom Line
What you wear to Pilates in Australia matters. Not because anyone is judging you, but because the right activewear lets you focus entirely on the work — on your breath, your alignment, your control — without thinking about your outfit at all.
High waist leggings that stay put. A fitted top your instructor can actually see your form through. A warm layer for before and after. That's the formula.
The LALLA activewear collection was designed with exactly this in mind — from The Pilates Core Set for the studio, to The Teddy Crop for everything around it. Both are available now at lalla.com.au, with free delivery on orders over $150 Australia-wide.
